Jayne Nankivell - Acting Director

Jayne has been involved with community cultural development projects throughout the Katherine region over the past 20 years as the inaugural officer of Katherine Regional Arts, presenting projects such as ‘Lets Go to the Outback’, ‘Slow Tucker Long Yarn’ and ‘Paint the Sky’. 

As an independent artist, Jayne has worked throughout the region to promote the artistic development of isolated women, assisting them to develop their art and craft projects.  This work resulted in her running the successful Barthulha Webs project for 5 years, which provided an opportunity for regional and remote women to participate in and tutor in an artists camp that focussed on printing and weaving and aimed to build stronger networks for women of the Katherine region and the Northern Territory. 

Jayne dedicated 12 years to progress opportunities for arts and cultural in the Katherine region as Project Officer progressing the development of the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre. 

Since the opening of the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre in 2012, Jayne has been actively involved as a staff member assisting with the strategic and operational  development of the centre under the direction of Director Cath Bowdler. 

Clare Armitage - Curator & Retail Manager

Clare Armitage was born in Sydney and has been in the Northern Territory for six years.

She has worked in commercial art galleries in Sydney, Darwin and Canberra, as well as public exhibition spaces.

In 2014/15 Clare undertook an Australia Council for the Arts Curatorial Fellowship at GYRACC, and in 2017 returned to work here as our Curator and Retail Manager.

Clare comes from an academic background in Art History and Philosophy. She has a Bachelor of Art Theory (Hons.) from the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, and a Master of Art History and Curatorial Studies from the Australian National University.

Clare has a particular interest in cross-cultural curatorial practice and story-telling, and has curated two major cross-cultural shows. Garnkiny to Ganyu – Artists who capture the night,   showed at the Godinymayin Centre in 2015. In 2017 Clare was named the inaugural Artback NT SPARK curator and Fecund: Fertile Worlds commenced touring the Northern Territory in March 2018.

Sarah Dunne - Venue Hire & Retail Officer

Sarah was born in Wales, and has spent the last nine years living in different parts of Australia. Sarah comes from a background in events and marketing, and works on GYRACC’s corporate venue hire, in our shop, and on special events.

For the last two years Sarah has lived in Katherine with her husband, two children, two cats, a dog, and a bearded dragon.

Sharlene Philips - Venue Hire & Retail Assistant

Sharlene Phillips was born in Derby in Western Australia, but her mother is a Karajarri woman, from Bidyadanga in the Kimberley, and her father is a Yindjibarndi man from Roebourne in the Pilbara. Sharlene grew up in Broome. Sharlene has worked for GYRACC over the last 5 years assisting with administration, front of house, venue hire, special events and in our shop. Sharlene loves our visual arts exhibitions and is interested in undertaking training in this area. Sharlene also works at the Katherine Visitor Centre welcoming people to our town.

For the last 12 years Sharlene has lived in Katherine with her husband, a Wardaman man, and her three children.
